Today Mike, our graphic designer reminded me as we were trying to figure out the next 5 weeks of media at North Point that we have potentially 7 different looks along with the DRIVE conference coming. Instantly I became overwhelmed knowing the different pieces that must come together in order for each Sunday to happen, as well as a conference and all it’s assets. Then I remembered and thought to myself “one thing at a time, just one thing.” It sounds silly, but just by taking one task off your plate, you have a sense of accomplishment. Then another, then another. Little by little the load starts to lift, the light at the end of the tunnel gets just a bit brighter. It may still seem far away, but at least there is less in the way.
Your pile of “stuff” may be getting larger and larger but if you can just start with one little item and check it off your list, what seems hopeless shortly turns into a victory.

Great point. Psychology research shows that multi-tasking only works if one of the tasks can be done automatically. Otherwise, the splitting of attention between things actually slows the whole process down and causes more stress.

The way I multi-task is that I tackle the hardest task first (editing the TV show). This allows me to work on other projects while it is rendering. One the render is complete, I can begin DVD authoring. While that is rendering, again, I can work on other projects. So, I’ve found that wisely managing render times is a form of effective multitasking because it doesn’t require divided attention.
