Final Cut 7?

picture-1Final Cut 7 came out earlier this year and NP’s media team has yet to think about making the plunge . . . until now. Like most of you know when working with a team of editors, when one person upgrades, the whole team has to upgrade if you expect to share timelines or projects. So factoring in this cost of $299, times however many editing suites you have, is a decision that can be difficult to rationalize. So I really want to hear from you all about your experience with Final Cut 7. What do you love most about it? What bugs have you run into? Has it made you more efficient because of the new features?
Talk to us and help others that are debating whether or not to upgrade.

you gotta upgrade, for the simple reason that Apple will (historically) stop supporting the old version

  2. Matt Rittgers Says:

I’m running the previous version. There’s really little encouraging me to dish out the extra cash right now… Other than I’d really like to be running snow leopard, and the previous FC version isn’t “supported”

  3. James Gleason Says:

I upgraded because I was rebuilding my MacPro Tower with Snow Leopard. It is faster at rendering. Plus, I upgraded so that I could work more with my Blu-ray drive.

    Chad King - True.

We are not running snow leopard (and probably won’t for a while). On a side note, I chatted with Brad Weston today @renewedvision and he is now certified with Final Cut 7. He also said test is difficult. For you ProPresentor guys, Brad knows more than just software. Valuable volunteer on Sundays with North Point. (I really want to see that book from his class.)

    Here’s the book…

Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro 7 (Paperback)
    ~ Diana Weynand (Author)

It was quite excellent… training materials were very current which made the training more interesting, including recutting a scene from an episode of this season’s “Leverage”

More advanced training by the same author is also available here:

I’ve been running it since September. I have had some issues inside color with the program incorrectly rendering clips and vignettes. But that was before any updates at that time. I haven’t had any problems since.

I think you will enjoy the ability for clip analysis to be done in the background when playback isn’t being used. It is a lifesaver to be able to continue to work and not have to worry about a smooth cam analysis tying everything up!

Our Studio has upgraded all of our systems to it, and we haven’t had many problems. Integration between FCP & Color seems even stronger. The upgraded iChat Theatre is definitely a life saver. We have editors in Atlanta, LA, Augusta and Costa Rica, and this feature seems smoother than all previous options.
