I saw an ad in our local paper (San Tan Sun News, Chandler AZ) for the Chandler Christan Church. They are using this photo to promote their church– this exact photo except they have “Easter Services” and the times and dates on the box, and under it their church logo. I was extremely confused by the add– what does religious icons in a box have to do with Easter services? Are they saying people should lose their religion and attend services and gain a new religion? But then, their are crosses in the box too. Or have they lost their religion through neglect and it’s time to pick it up again? But what if they are not Christian? If a Buddhist saw this ad are they supposed to be inspired by it?
Also, I’m not sure that our diverse community will like this ad very much, or that it would encourage them to think about attending church if they come from a different background. I think that instead it puts up a fence between neighbors. You can be for Christ without offending people’s faiths or cultures by shoving them all together in a cardboard box. Build bridges by things people have in common, not by offending people.
