CONCEPT
-Media Meeting with Kidstuf to determine direction of the Promo spot.
-Ideas brought up referenced “HP” and “Drinkability” commercials

-Interaction with Graphical elements (Our Subjects= Dad & Son talking about Kidstuf)
-can we pull this off technically in the time given, challenging but I thought we could???
SCRIPT / ROUGH STORYBOARD
-Donny Joiner from Kidstuf wrote the script and rough sketches of what he had in mind for interactions & voiceover
PDF Script: ks-promo-story-board
ARTWORK
-Mike Davis contacted an artist, Joe Goode, to sketch what Kidstuf had as rough idea
VIDEO SHOOT STORYBOARD
-making sure I had all the assets needed from artist, and figuring out how in the world to make these interact & flow smoothly.
-visualize the entire video in my head and walk through it with Kidstuf
TECHNICAL PREP
-how in the world are the talent going to know where to point and interact???
-hmm….. print drawings on transparency paper? Not just for “Lord I Lift Your Name On High” overheads anymore.
-Scale is important, based on monitor size so the talent draws proper size circle, etc.
VIDEO SHOOT / GREEN SCREEN
-Used HVX200 720p, 24fps, captured to P2
-Greenscreen Shoot in Kidstuf area, 1 locked off shot critical, can’t move.
-turn monitor around so talent can see themselves.
-hmmm… talent can’t hit marks because their movements are backwards on monitor
-I was looking for a magical BNC adapter that could just flip horizontal video, don’t think they exist?
- our intern Nathan had a genius idea to use old Videonics switcher (old school lovin’)…

-YES, it worked, now talent can interact properly by looking at monitor and focus on hitting marks.
-tape layered transparencies on screen so talent can hit key marks

-script read aloud as talent acts
-Do about 20 takes until I have every mark hit nearly perfect on a single take
POST-PRODUCTION (Motion GFX/Editing)
-Transfer P2 footage
-Adobe AfterFX, Key footage (best take)
-rough key-framing with drawings from artist
-Thank goodness talent hit their marks, HUGE relief technically
- chose to not motion-track and create animations frame-by-frame, gave it a loose, natural, not perfect feeling
-I love the airplane!!!!!!!!! Fun loopty-loop!

-tedious, tedious key-framing
-add motion blur, lighting 2d objects in 3d
-did I mention tedious key-framing yet???
-render… fix… render… fix
-In FCP: import renders, sound design, Music Bed and Voiceover
-First voice didn’t feel good, recorded new voice
-We actually liked first voice better, going with that
FINAL PROOFS
-Send Rough demos to Media Team for initial feedback
-SPD Producer/Ministry feedback
-make any Final edits, usually end tag tweaks.
-Export OMF… We master audio in our studio using ProTools
-52+ hours later… EXPORT VIDEO for Sunday Morning!!!

Great video loved seeing your workflow from concept to finish product thats something I’m really stressing at the church I work at. Its hard being the only full time editor but if the workflow was tightened up our final product would look a lot more finished than it does. Your blog is a helpful example to show other people what it takes to get a job done and get it done right in the church world.

glad you guys like the video. We definitely strive to do things around here with excellence. Many times videos are the first impression people get of our church, besides parking lot & host teams. We definitely want our professional quality & concepts to break down those walls & ideas that people may have about “typical” church. the videos you create can do that… especially when it’s humor. Let us know if you ever have any questions.

also to add to that, we are certainly blessed with a team of very talented people which helps the process. I know what it’s like to be the “Lone Ranger.” What makes our team successful is FOCUS. We try to allow as much bandwith in our schedule so each editor can focus on 1 project at a time. Yes, there are times of overflow where 1 person may be handling 3 or more, but the deadlines are usually not identical. It reminds me of a line that’s been stuck in my head for years, one of our speakers at DRIVE said, “You can do alot of good things, but never make anything GREAT!” Dave Ramsey would call that Focused Intensity.

Very cool way to break down process, from storyboard to final product. As one who was hesitant about church when I first came last year, the media production stood out in my mind as phenomenal, and I thought, “if they have people who are actually in touch with the latest technology, maybe they’re not all Jesus freaks lost in delirious self-importance and funded by those just as brainwashed as them.”
Great job. And also, thanks for sharing. Passing on to my social media friends, who I know will love this as well.

Lindsay,
“maybe they’re not all Jesus freaks lost in delirious self-importance and funded by those just as brainwashed as them.” HA, love it. Thanks for stopping by.

best line: print drawings on transparency paper? Not just for “Lord I Lift Your Name On High” overheads
thanks for posting!

Great concept. By the way, I have that same Videonics switcher! Haha.
Just curious — why do a green screen key when it could have just been shot on a photographic white background?
