Techno Tricks

teleport-layoutJust a quick tip that I picked up last month from one of our IT guys about an AMAZING Mac program that’s so cool it’s not even fair.  Couldn’t believe I’d never heard of it.  Many of you may already have this but for everybody else, I needed to share.  If you’re new to “teleport” and you’re a Mac user, this could change a lot of things!!

Teleport is a program that allows you to set up two separate Macs side-by-side and have them functionally operate with ONE mouse and ONE keyboard–basically as extensions of each other–almost as though they are the same computer.  As long as they are both on the same wireless network, you can drag files between them, use your keyboard to type or use your mouse to control either one, AND even copy & paste text or other items from one to the other.  So for a number of us here who have both a laptop and a desktop computer side by side at work, it only makes sense to have a program like this handy.

Teleport, like any freeware, can be a little buggy from time to time–but the practical uses for it are endless.  It’s much easier than emailing yourself or using a jumpdrive over and over to transfer little files between your computers (ESPECIALLY if they’re already next to each other).  You just install it on both computers, activate the program on each via your System Preferences, make the computers “trust” each other, and lay them out graphically the way you want them.  Then it’s like magic.  Best of all, it’s FREE!  Check it out here: http://abyssoft.com/software/teleport/

Thanks! This will be helpful in the near future.

I’ve been using Teleport for about 6 months now, between my iMac and Macbook Pro. It’s a beautiful thing not having to switch back and forth to computers anymore.

I’m sure everyone’s already using Dropbox by now, but I’ve only recently discovered the value in it. I love the fact that I can store the same file locally on two computers and update it on both of them instantly without having to manually move over the files. Such a time saver!

I’ve used Synergy that is like Teleport but serverly outdated and doesn’t offer the drag and drop functionality so I’m definitely moving to Teleport. Another great tool is Logmein.com. It’s totally free for basic remote access for controlling machines through your browser and and works on all platforms. If you don’t have a remote access program, give it a try. They also have an iPhone app that works with it as well so you can remote into machines from your phone!

Teleport is a great app. I use it all the time when managing multiple Macs that we have around campus. The only problem that I’ve experience is activating Teleport to another mac accidentally and losing control of the local mac before screen sharing was active.

My recommendation is to choose your hot keys for activating Teleport wisely, don’t make it something that is easily/accidentally pressed when your mouse is near the Teleport hot spot.

The other day I was remote controlling my work mac from my MBP at home using Logmein.com and Teleport was accidently activated and I couldn’t do anything at that point. Thankfully my brother was at the church and was able to go to the mac and deactivate Teleport and I regained control.

Anyway, I just wanted to share some usage cautions, otherwise its a kickin’ app.

Great app! We installed it on our main editing mac pro and now we can sit our laptop beside it and voila - it becomes a part of the machine! Thanks for posting the tip.
