This Sunday we had one of the most creative logos I think we’ve ever had for our service. It wasn’t done in house; it was the brain child of Nick Holoman, an incredibly creative designer in Atlanta. We are truly blessed by the pool of talent we have around us. From talking with him, he says the idea for the logo just came to him and he was very happy it turned out the way he thought it would.
Overall this new 2-part series is about the divide in our country. Everyone sees things differently and believes the solution to the problem is different. Andy proposes that there is a much deeper thing going on, and that this debate is soon going to take center stage. He asks, “What role does God play in our country?”
The design was meant to feel “American” without being over celebratory. We wanted to reflect something older and a bit worn. We also wanted to show the divide, thus the direction of the red and blue split in the country. The design had some fun challenges in the final execution. Nick did an incredible job with the details using layer masks and multiple layer modes to help the logo seem actually painted onto the wood. Though the effect looked great there was a readability issue with the red and blue versus the white. The white word “and” wasn’t the keyword, but it was by far the most readable. So depending on the type of execution (video, web, print) we changed the logo slightly–sometimes favoring a one-color look and other times reversing the stencil to aid in readability. We hope the solution worked and still kept the overall brand solid. The bulletin (left) shows some of the different color scenarios.
The Title Package ended up great. Matt Gibson finished it up after a great start from Taylor Cox, a freelance designer currently out of Spartanburg, SC. We started our first draft by experimenting with sound bites from news clips that talked about about current debates in our country. Then we couldn’t get rights to use the clips, so we had to change it up. The new direction focused on the use of God in speeches from US leaders, while visually focusing on historical elements that illustrate the long history God has played in our country. The focus of the title package started as a reference to the current debate going on in our country and shifted to our country’s history. In the end the shift in title package worked much better than the original idea. It seemed to me to set up Andy’s ultimate point much better; that our country does have a very strong historical tie to God. You can see Andy’s entire message from Sunday at NorthPoint.org.
