Teaching Kids to Pray!

If you want to know God better, talk to Him!

All month long we are teaching our kids about the Big Idea of Discipline:  doing what you need to do now so you can grow stronger.

Things like reading your Bible, memorizing his Word, prayer, learning together, and putting him first. It’s all a part of the Game Plan for January! You can find out more about our curriculum here.

Sunday we talked about prayer!

We focused on The Lord’s Prayer as our model. But there is A LOT to learn from The Lord’s Prayer! Especially if you are 10 years old! So we came up with a fun cheer to plop in the middle of our story to really help the whole idea stick!

Here’s what each letter of the cheer stood for. This was unpacked in the script for them.

P = Praise Him. Praise God for who he is, for what he has made, for how great he is.

R = Recognize! Recognize that we need him. That he is the one true God. That he meets our needs.

A = Ask Him! Ask God for forgiveness. Acknowledge that we sin. Tell him we’re sorry.

Y = You and Me! Tell God about what’s going on in our own lives. Talk to him about the personal stuff. Talk to him about others. Ask for his help in the lives of those around us.

Preparing our Storytellers:

Sometimes when we’re editing scripts, we realize that it’s difficult to explain in writing what we’re wanting our storytellers to do. On any given Sunday, we need 18 different storytellers. And we want them ALL to be great!

One thing we’ve tried lately is to email them a low tech video and SHOW them what we’re looking for. This makes their preparation so much easier and ensures that everyone is on the same page.

We shot this during a break on our staff retreat last week. Nothing fancy. Super simple cheer. But in about 30 seconds we helped all of our communicators know exactly what we were looking for. Easy!

Here are 2 examples of what we sent to our leaders last week to help them prepare for Sunday.

What you see in this video is not all that we taught in large group on Sunday. It was just an opportunity to engage the kids in the middle of the story and help make the idea of how God wants us to pray a little more engaging and memorable.

What we are teaching is so important. It’s not enough that they learn the facts of the information. Or just memorize The Lord’s Prayer. We have to help our kids know how this fits into their lives today!

Teaching them a cheer was one way to help them walk out the door and take what they are learning about prayer home with them. It helped it stick!

What if children grew up believing that they could talk to God anytime and any place?
