How do you make sure that your preschool environment is safe and healthy?
A few times a year we remind both our volunteers and our parents of our wellness policy.
Here’s what we tell our volunteers:
Children who show signs of illness should not be allowed into the classroom. When addressing this issue with parents, assure them that we want their child in Waumba Land as soon as they are feeling better.
If you continually have a problem with a sick child, enlist the help of your coach. If an illness is discovered after a child is in the classroom, remove the child from the other children and ask your coach to locate their parents.
Here’s what we tell our parents:
It’s that time of year when colds and the flu can easily be passed. We want to provide a safe and healthy environment. Please know that we require that a child be fever-free for 24 hours before entering Waumba Land. We also ask that you adhere to the following wellness policy.
If in doubt, please apply the golden rule. It’s important to us that we protect the health of all of the children in our environment.
Here’s our wellness policy:
Upon recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics, we ask that a child is not brought to Waumba Land when the following conditions exist:
• Fever (We require a child to be free of fever for 24 hours before entering Waumba Land.)
• Vomiting or diarrhea (within the past 24 hours)
• Symptoms of childhood diseases such as chicken pox, croup, strep throat, flu, etc.
• Any unexplained rash
• Pink eye or other eye infections
• Cloudy or green runny noses or persistent cough
What policies do you have in place for sick children?

How do you communicate this to your parents? Do you have a flier you print out, video, bulletin, signage? And when? Is it just done consistently or during the flu season? Thank you for your help.

Hi Jody,
We have handed out a card on Sunday morning for a couple of weeks. This year we are sending out an eblast to all preschool and elementary parents.
We usually send it out early fall — flu season and the start of the school year. Good time to remind everyone. We have sent it out in the spring before as well.
It is also posted on our web site and its a printed card available at our front desk.
Hope that helps! I’ll post our eblast next week.

We recently sent out an email to everyone on our church email list (not just parents) asking that parents/caregivers not bring their kids to class (Nursery, Early Childhood and Elementary) when they are sick or have symptoms similar to what you’ve stated above.
